Tarawera Falls where created when Mt Tarawera Blew up in 1800 something. The outlet from the lake disappears underground and apeares through this cliff. It was a 3 Hour walk there and back along mainly flat path through light bush.
To get to the DOC Camp at Lake Tarawera You need a permit from the I centre in town, then a 27 kns drive through pine forest to the lake. It makes you realise how big these forests are and how much work went into planting them
Kawerau is about 50kms from Rotorua , a great drive past the lakes and Pine forests. A very tidy neat little town with the usual shops, three schools, plus Collage. Of course the Pulp mill is there also. Free Spa and Hot Pools plus free movan camping.
Red woods is a large forest just on the outskirts of Rotorua with a large number of walking tracks which can be used by people, horse and dogs ( with their owners) . There is also heaps of world class bike rides, but no old foke rides
